Martinho da Arcada - Lisbon's oldest Restaurant

Martinho da Arcada

Café Restaurant Martinho da Arcada is reputedly Portugal’s oldest restaurant. It was opened by the Marquis de Pombal in 1782 and located at the corner of Commercial Square (also known as Palace Square) in the heart of Lisbon and listed as a Portuguese Architectural Heritage. It was the favourite meeting place of many public figures in society including politicians, celebrities, artists and writers in the past. One of the most frequent and famous customers was Fernando Pessoa, a major figure in the literary world and one of the greatest poets of the Portuguese language in the 20th century. He had a favourite table in a corner where he used to have coffee and work. Today his table is still there as he left it with his books and coffee cup overlooked by his portrait on the wall as a tribute to him.

The Café Restaurant has an old world traditional décor in keeping with its heritage. It specialises in authentic popular Portuguese cuisine.  There are also seats outside in the arcade where one can watch the world go by in the bustling Commercial Square.

This restaurant serves authentic Portuguese food in a traditional environment with recipes passed on from generation to generation.

On our second visit to Lisbon, we went to Martinho da Arcada again. We had a delicious rice and octopus stew recommended by our waiter. We would certainly recommend this restaurant not only because of its great food but also for its excellent service.
